***Introductory Statement***

Charles Tandy, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Humanities, and a Senior Faculty Research Fellow in Bioethics, at Fooyin University (Taiwan).

Ø   He is author or editor of numerous publications. Since 2003, Dr. Tandy has been (and continues to be) Editor of the annual anthology, Death and Anti-Death; it has included contributions by some of the world’s leading living philosophers and scientists. Recently he also authored a book of his own essays entitled 21st Century Clues: Essays in Ethics, Ontology, and Time Travel, published in 2010 by Ria University Press and available in both hardback and paperback.

Ø   Along with Nobel Laureates (Sir Clive W. J. Granger; Eric S. Maskin; Wole Soyinka) and others, Dr. Tandy is a member of the Board of Advisors of the Lifeboat Foundation; this includes being an ethics advisor and an educational video screenwriter for the Lifeboat Foundation. Indeed, Dr. Tandy is a board member, advisor, or consultant to a variety of charitable and educational institutions.

The long lists entitled below “Areas Of Specialization” and “Areas Of Competence” tend to be a function of the fact that Dr. Tandy’s research and teaching in the general humanities (liberal arts) typically relates to one or more of the following four areas:

● Biomedical Ethics

● Futuristic Studies

● Global History

● Interdisciplinary Philosophy

Some of Dr. Tandy’s philosophical essays blind-reviewed by his peers with approval (publication) by established academic journals include topics related to ontology, time travel, and ethics – to wit:

Ø   Dr. Tandy is the inventor of omniverse theory. Omniverse theory is primarily a general-philosophic, as distinguished from a physical-scientific, model of reality which nevertheless takes physical-science seriously. At first, in 2008, the ontological distinctions of the all-reality model were formulated as: mental-reality; physical-reality; and, all-reality. But in the 2009 theory, all-reality is referred to as the omniverse (hence: omniverse theory). The ontological distinctions were then articulated along the following lines. My self has a sense of personal (or self) reality that is influenced by temporal (or contingent) reality and by paragonal (or necessary) reality in an omniverse environment (the omniverse is all of reality).

Ø   Dr. Tandy is a pioneer in time travel and suspended animation. He is author of scholarly publications on the ethics and metaphysics of time travel and suspended animation. He has argued that sooner or later the perfection of: (1) forward-directed time travel (for example, biostasis) is “very likely”; and, (2) past-directed time travel (for example, time viewing) is “likely” (given reasonable assumptions explicitly stated by him).

Ø   Dr. Tandy is founder of the UP-TO Project. The UP-TO Project seeks to help achieve a prosperous and peaceful world. It is an interconnected set of proposals meant to improve terrestrial society, ban extraterrestrial weapons, and proactively structure an extraterrestrial world at stable peace fit for free persons living in SEGITs (Self-sufficient Extra-terrestrial Green-habitat Intentional Transparent [self-replicating] communities).

Much of Dr. Tandy’s work focuses on “big picture” issues related to the future of humanity. For example, how may our worldviews, technologies, and decisions affect future human existence? (Such profoundly important issues are under-explored and under-funded. Moreover, to the extent such explorations are funded or undertaken, the studies are often flawed by present-centric, ethno-centric, or discipline-centric thinking. In life, politics, and scholarship, our foresighted, global, and interdisciplinary perspectives are dangerously underdeveloped.)

Dr. Tandy is dedicated to encouraging scientific advancements while helping humanity to proactively prevent doomsday and to wisely foresee and manage catastrophic risks and possible misuse of increasingly powerful technologies, including Genetics (genetic-technology), Robotics (robotic-technology), Informatics (information-technology), and Nanotech (nano-technology), as we move towards a technological singularity.

In some situations it is both desirable and feasible to ban technology or to promote technology or to relinquish technological capacity in favor of the public interest, so as to prevent doomsday and wisely manage risks and opportunities. (For example, Dr. Tandy opposes action to build space-based [extraterrestrial] weapons. For example, Dr. Tandy favors action to build Self-sufficient Extra-terrestrial Green-habitat Intentional Transparent communities [SEGITs]. For example, Dr. Tandy

opposes the U.S. government recently purposely posting on the internet a recipe for the 1918 flu virus. For example, Dr. Tandy opposes the U.S. government recently accidentally posting on the internet a guidebook on how to build an atomic bomb.)
